The engines in the Xterras are really strong and will last a long, long time. The only real drawback to the nissan v6 engines, is that they don't do that great on gas. This article will teach you how to get those extra MPG's out of the Xterra. Hey every little bit helps these days right?
Ok, me and a member of our Xterra group was talking about the not so good mpg's of the xterra and pathfinders. Mine is getting 18-22 city / highway.
Here are a few things to help get extra MPG out of the Xterra:
1. Keep tires fully aired (A few psi under maxx) This helps big time.
2. Use 5W-30 motor oil. (Owners manuel states this helps a bit).
3. Keep the extra weight down. (Clean out the crap) every pound helps.
4. Use injector cleaner every oil change.
5. Change fuel filter every 60,000 miles. (I do mine 30,000, it's easy)
6. Change spark plugs (60,000 miles)
7. High Flow Air Filter from K&N. (This is my favorite) increase airflow by 40% over crappy paper filters. I like for two reasons: 1. Increase horsepower of engine by 5-12 HP! 2. More MPG, about 1-3 more! You will notice a difference!!! I did mine last week. They are 45.00 dollars at any auto parts stores. They are EASY to install, just replace factory paper air filter.
THE BONUS! It's reusable, it will PAY FOR ITSELF in a year.
GO GET ONE, thank me for it later.
8. Clean your MAF sensor, careful with this one, the maf is right after the air filter and reads the amount and temp of incoming air. They make MAF cleaner just for this. (Only use this, and nothing else). I do this when i clean my air filter. Some people suggest disconnecting the battery while doing this.
9. Remove your intake resonators, this is more advanced, but will add HP and MPG. It does make the engine just a touch louder. It makes the engine breath easier, and more efficient, (I'm doing this next week, and will do a full write up) You must plug the holes after removing.
10. How you drive also makes a HUGE difference. So keep of the throttle.
11. Having the A/C on of course also negatively effects MPG.
Questions??????
Hope this helps.
All of these will net anywhere from 2-4 mpgs out of the Xterra!!!!
